Should I get lip filler or a lip flip? Or both? Yes, the latter is an option too.
With over 189.3 million views on TikTok, the “lip flip” has gained significant popularity in the last couple of years. And while I’ll never underestimate the power of TikTok (you can follow me here), I wouldn’t recommend getting all of your cosmetic injection information from the beloved platform.
The off-label botox treatment is gaining as much of a bad reputation as it is popularity. I recently tried out a lip flip for myself to debunk some of the myths circulating our feeds. Five days post injection and I am loving my lip flip results so far (full results will be seen at 14 days).
What is a lip flip?
Using four to six units of botox in the cupid’s bow and corners of the mouth, lip flips relax the upper lip causing it to flip upward and outward. The results? The appearance of more volume, without adding any volume. When the nerve impulses in the lip are interrupted with botox, it limits the lip from curling under while smiling, creating the appearance of plumper, fuller lips. Lip flips also help reduce the vertical fine lines that can form around the mouth as we age or if one has a history of smoking. The results are subtle making this treatment option best for those with a thin upper lip or with a gummy smile.
Botox results typically take full effect on day 14, but as you can see in my own transformation, they can become visible earlier. Lip flip results last three to four months, varying based on each individual and their metabolism.
How many units of botox will I need for a lip flip?
Typically lip flips require four to ten units of botox, which at approximately $9/unit makes the treatment quite reasonably priced. That being said, the frequency of treatments is higher in comparison to lip filler. Depending on how your body reacts to botox, you may require more units—this is something we can talk about during the consultation portion of your appointment. As always, if you aren’t 100 percent comfortable moving forward with the treatment after the consultation, there is absolutely no pressure.
How are lip flips and lip fillers different?
There are a few key differences between lip flips and fillers despite their overall goal of achieving fuller looking lips. Lip flips use botox to relax the upper lip outwards to give a fuller (yet subtle) appearance; lip fillers add volume via hyaluronic acid to the either upper or lower lips. Lip flips involve minimal swelling and last two to three months; lip fillers cause up to 20 percent swelling for up to one week and last four to six months. Lip flips are not reversible; the effects of botox will need to resolve naturally. Lip fillers however, can be dissolved if needed. Neither treatment is permanent. Okay, that was a lot of information, let’s break it down:
Lip Flip

Lip Filler
-
Dermal filler is injected (I use Revanesse Kiss)

-
Subtle to significant results depending on the amount used
-
Results are immediate, swelling lasts one to two weeks
-
Treats both the upper and bottom lip
-
Solution to asymmetry
-
Possible side effects include bruising or filler migration
Who shouldn’t get a lip flip?
Like with any cosmetic injections, those pregnant or breastfeeding are not eligible to get a lip flip. Always consult with your family doctor prior to starting a new treatment.
Should I get a lip flip or lip filler?
The choice is ultimately yours to make; however, I am happy to provide you with my professional opinion based on the shape of your natural lips and your desired results. All of my appointments have a built-in consultation portion. If you are not comfortable moving forward, there is absolutely no pressure or fee. While it would be best for me to see your lips in person before giving you advice, in general here are my thoughts on getting a lip flip verses lip fillers:
-
A lip flip helps achieve a pouty, yet subtle look for the upper lip only
-
A lip flip amplifies the natural shape of your top lip
-
Lip fillers can help address asymmetry and alter the shape and volume of both the upper and lower lips
-
Lip fillers are more expensive at ($550 per full syringe), but last longer than lip flips
-
For some people, a combination of lip fillers and a lip flip is actually the best option
