Answering all your questions about bumps and lumps post filler. PS, it’s going to be okay!
You just got home from your lip filler treatment and naturally head to the mirror to stare at your new, beautiful lips. That’s when…are those bumps? Breathe. Bumps and lumps after lip filler and other face fillers can occur, but they likely will go away on their own in a few days.
Why do bumps and lumps after lip filler occur?
There are few reasons why bumps and lumps may occur after your filler injection. Sometimes it is due to improper technique used by your injector. I highly recommend you read this blog on how to choose the right injector. Even if you aren’t in the Vancouver Island area, the red flags to watch out for in injectors and my other tips should help guide you to the right injector in your area.
Lumps and bumps can occur after filler injections if the product is injected too superficially, if too much product is injected into one area, or if the filler moves to create a deposit in one area. The latter can occur even with the most experienced injector using proper technique.
What can I do to prevent lumps and bumps post filler?
In order to avoid lumps and bumps after filler, follow your pre and post care instructions fully. You can check out my guide to filler here. Applying ice post filler treatment, especially for the lips, can help reduce swelling and prevent the product from creating large deposits. Other helpful tips you’ll find in my guide include avoiding sleeping with your face on the pillow the first couple of night after your treatment and avoiding touching the area with any kind of force.
What happens if the filler lumps and bumps don’t go away on their own?
If bumps or lumps appear after you filler treatment and do not go away after a week or so, please contact your injector. Do not massage your filler without being instructed to do so by your injector. Why? Because massaging the product too early can actually make your bumps, lumps or asymmetry worse. Your injector will not recommend you massage for at least 72 hours and even then, sometimes I will ask patients to come see me before we begin to mould or massage.
In the event that the lumps and bumps do not go away on their own and that simple massaging doesn’t help, you still have two more options. The filler can be dissolved using an injectable hyaluronidase. This will over a few days naturally remove the uneven filler, allowing you to get new smooth filler in a couple weeks. To learn more about the dissolving process, read this blog on filler migration that outlines the process in more detail. Smoothing the uneven filler with an additional touch up syringe can be successful and may be an option for you as well.
Just remember to contact your injector if you’re seeing bumps and lumps after 72 hours and they will talk you through your options and their recommendations. As mentioned, most of the time bumps will go away on their own after a couple of weeks.
Filler Treatments in Vancouver Island
When it comes to booking your filler treatments, the best way to prevent lumps and bumps is by choosing an experienced injector. When you book, ask questions about the brand of filler your injector uses and get to understand how your body responds to the formula. Not every individual will experience the same results with the same brand. If you book with me, after a treatment or two we will get to understand what works best for you.
