Sculptra®
PLLA Collagen Biostimulator

What is Sculptra®?
As a Naturopathic Doctor, my aim is always to get to the root cause of a symptom—and that’s why I trust and appreciate Sculptra® so much. Sculptra® works to address the underlying cause of facial aging, not just the symptoms. This collagen biostimulator is a poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) that works to improve the skin’s inner structure.
Unlike traditional dermal fillers you may be more familiar with, Sculptra® does not work immediately to increase volume. Instead, the PLLA microparticles work to restore collagen over time, improving volume loss, fine lines and wrinkles.
With collagen production decreasing by one percent per year, we can face up to 25 percent collagen loss by age 45. Sculptra® studies have shown a 66.5 percent increase of collagen in the skin after just three months. Ninety-seven percent of patients in this study also showed had aesthetic improvement 13 months after the first treatment, and 66 percent of the patients still had improvement at five years.

Is there downtime associated with Sculptra®?
Following your post-care instructions after Sculptra® treatments will be vital in achieving optimal results. After your treatment, you might experience side effects like tenderness, redness, bruising, or swelling, which can last up to 14 days. You will be required to follow the 5-5-5 instructions, massaging the treated area for five minutes, five times a day, for five days. To reduce swelling, apply ice wrapped in cloth to the treatment area within the first 24 hours. Avoid strenuous exercise, extensive sun exposure, and extreme temperatures for the first 24 hours post-treatment. If there aren’t any complications (open wounds), you can apply make-up a few hours post-treatment.
How does Sculptra® actually work?
Sculptra® is a dermal filler made of poly-L-lactic acid, designed to stimulate collagen production rather than just filling the skin. Upon injection, it triggers a controlled inflammatory response, signaling the body to generate more collagen, a vital protein for skin elasticity and volume. Fibroblast cells in the skin respond by creating new collagen fibers. Over time, the Sculptra® particles are metabolized by the body, but the increased collagen remains. This results in enhanced skin thickness and elasticity, reducing wrinkles and fine lines. The outcomes are natural-looking and typically more long-lasting compared to some other fillers.
How much does Sculptra® cost?
For most patients, a series of two to three treatments is recommended to achieve optimal results, using two vials per session. The cost for a two-vial Sculptra® session is $1,600, with maintenance typically recommended every one to two years.
