And why mesotherapy with hyaluronic acid is your skin’s (and your filler’s) best friend.

Is your skin dehydrated right now? Before we get into the telltale signs that would suggest that it is, let’s first discuss the difference between dry skin and dehydrated skin. It is completely possible to have both dry and dehydrated skin, but it is important to note that dry skin is actually a skin type that lacks natural oils. Whereas dehydrated skin is a skin condition that lacks water.

There are several ways that dry skin can be addressed via a dermatologist, but we are going to focus on dehydrated skin, which can affect anyone, regardless of their skin type. Dehydration can cause dullness, flakiness, sensitivity, and perhaps most alarming: premature ageing. Moisture is your skin’s best friend and therefore, so is mesotherapy. But we will get to that in a minute.

Four Signs Your Skin is Dehydrated

If you are experiencing one or more of the following symptoms, it’s likely your skin is dehydrated. But don’t panic, we will talk about solutions next.

  1. Your skin feels tight and rough.

When the outer layer of your skin, the stratum corneum, loses its ability to retain water it  becomes dry and brittle. You’ll begin to notice tightness and roughness when this happens. You may also notice dullness as water helps reflect light, giving your skin a healthy glow. Without the water, there’s no glow.

  1. Your skin is more prone to irritation and inflammation.

When your skin is dehydrated, its moisture barrier is disrupted and therefore, becomes more vulnerable to environmental stressors such as: sun exposure, pollution, harsh chemicals, and temperature changes. These factors can trigger your skin’s immune system to produce inflammatory substances that cause redness, itching, burning, or stinging sensations. Your skin may also develop rashes, eczema, or rosacea as a result of dehydration.

  1. Your skin shows more fine lines and wrinkles.

Water is essential for maintaining your skin’s elasticity and firmness, as it supports the production of collagen and elastin, the proteins that keep your skin smooth and supple. When your skin is dehydrated, it loses its plumpness and volume, which leads to the formation of creases and folds in your skin. Essentially, dehydration can cause you to notice your existing wrinkles (as they will be more noticeable and deeper) and even create new ones.

  1. Your skin has uneven texture and tone.

Are you noticing your skin just looks a bit more tired than usual? You’re probably dehydrated. A flaky or scaly texture is common when the skin is dehydrated. Dark spots or patches may also develop as dehydration can affect your skin’s ability to regulate melanin production. And if that’s not enough, dehydration can also cause your pores to appear larger and more clogged—with no water to help flush out impurities, your pores can become congested.

How To Hydrate Your Skin From Within

If you notice one or more of the signs mentioned above, your skin is likely dehydrated, if not, extremely dehydrated. Even if you’re moisturising and drinking plenty of water, dehydration happens for a number of reasons: weather, diet, and the use of harsh skincare products. Nutrition lacking in essential fatty acids and vitamins can also contribute to skin dehydration. Personally, I find each season transition difficult for my skin so I’ve been incorporating mesotherapy with hyaluronic acid into my own routine to help immediately address the lack of moisture.

What is mesotherapy with hyaluronic acid?

If you’ve been a patient of mine or following me for a while, you’ll know I’ve been talking about mesotherapy for a couple years now. This anti-aging treatment was introduced to me when I was struggling to deal with dehydration with topical options. I first noticed my skin’s dehydration when my dermal filler was not lasting the way it used to. Dermal filler uses hyaluronic acid, which can hold up to a thousand times its weight in water, to create volume. When there is not water readily available, that volume can then deplete at a much faster rate.

So like any treatment I offer, I first tried mesotherapy for my own skin to see if the results stood up to the rave reviews I was finding online—and it did! After my first series of three mesotherapy treatments, I was hooked.

Mesotherapy with the V2 Beauty Booster uses a series of nine microinjections to penetrate the mesoderm (the middle layer of the skin) injecting the hydration and nutrients your skin craves. I like to describe it as getting all of your recommended water intake, plus some, directly into your skin. There are multiple types of mesotherapy “cocktails” but the one I used myself and trust with my patients is Redensity® 1, a patented combination of non-cross linked hyaluronic acid and amino acids, antioxidants, minerals and vitamins.

During the approximately 20-minute treatment, the handheld microneedling device simultaneously creates target wounds (promoting your body’s natural healing processes to encourage collagen production) and delivers the cocktail deep into the mesoderm to nourish the skin. Essentially, the fine wounds stimulate the fibroblast cell in the skin to produce more collagen and repair at an optimum level—all while the hydrating hyaluronic acid gives your skin that firm, youthful glow. If you are sitting there thinking, this treatment sounds similar to the liquid facial the Kardashians always talk about, it is. Mesotherapy, V2 Beauty Booster or a liquid facial—whatever you want to call it, it’s magic.

Even after my first mesotherapy treatment, I noticed a glow to my skin and my makeup sitting a lot better due to the improved overall smoother texture—and what’s more, I felt like I didn’t even want or need to wear makeup because my skin was in the best condition I had seen it in years.  As the weeks went on, I continued to notice how well my skin was responding to the products that were already in my roster.  I’ve now been offering and recommending mesotherapy to my patients looking to extend the life of their fillers and complement their current skin care regimen for well over a year (all well continuing my own treatments).

While the number of V2 Beauty Booster treatments required may differ from individual to individual, typically optimal results can be achieved in a series of  three treatments spaced one month apart. Maintenance sessions are recommended two to three times a year to maintain optimal results however, skin will remain improved for up to 12 months without upkeep. I personally love the results I can achieve with mesotherapy treatments a few times a year at the turn of the seasons. I actually wrote an entire blog post that outlines my honest experience in full detail, which I hope will help answer your questions and make the decision that much easier.
